Access to the published version may require subscription. Vapor sensors are easily fabricated onto alumina substrates using foils of silver-decorated nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CN í µí±-MWNTs-Ag) as active sensing material. The vapor sensors are tested using carbon disulfide, acetone, ethanol, and chloroform vapors. The CN í µí±-MWNTs are produced by chemical vapor deposition process and then decorated with 14 nm Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). The samples are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Our results demonstrate that Ag-decorated CN í µí±-MWNTs exhibit a better response and sensitivity when compared with pristine CN í µí±-MWNTs based sensors, making them promising candidates for air-pollutants environmental monitoring. The temperature effect on the sensor performance is also studied; we found that the detection mechanism could be tuned from physisorption, at room temperature, to chemisorption at higher working temperature. Finally, first-principles density functional calculations are carried out to understand the interactions between the systems involved in the sensors, finding good agreement between experimental results and the theoretical approach.

Controllable synthesis of silver nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene oxide hybrids for ammonia detection.
We demonstrate controllable fabrication of Ag nanoparticle (NP)-decorated reduced graphene oxide (RGO/Ag) hybrids and their application for fast and selective detection of ammonia at room temperature. Ag NPs greatly improved the sensitivity of RGO. The response time (6 s) and recovery time (10 s) are comparable with our previous Ag NP-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT/Ag) NH3 sensors...
متن کاملPt- and Pd-decorated MWCNTs for vapour and gas detection at room temperature
Here we report on the gas sensing properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes decorated with sputtered Pt or Pd nanoparticles. Sputtering allows for an oxygen plasma treatment that removes amorphous carbon from the surface of the carbon nanotubes and creates oxygenated surface defects in which metal nanoparticles nucleate within a few minutes. The decoration with the 2 nm Pt or the 3 nm Pd nanop...
متن کاملPreparation and Characterization of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes-Polythiophene Nanocomposites and its Gas Sensitivity Study at Room Temperature
The nanocomposites of polythiophene and carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized by in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization method using anhydrous ferric chloride (FeCl3) as an oxidant. The MWCNTs functionalized and ultrasonicated to obtain uniform dispersion within the polythiophene matrix. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the mo...

In the present work, hydrogen gas sensor of modest sensitivity utilizing functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes partially decorated with tin oxide nanoparticles (F-MWCNTs/SnO2) has been fabricated. This sensing material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, a remarkable finding was that the F-MWCNTs/SnO2 sensor shows good sensitivity as compared to F-MWCNTs ...
